How We Acoustically Treat Our Studios

Most rehearsal spaces treat acoustics as an afterthought. Hang a few moving blankets, call it soundproofing, move on. If you've ever rehearsed somewhere like that — where you can hear the band next door clearer than your own monitor, or where every chord you play dissolves into a washy blur — you know exactly how much that matters.
At Treasure Valley Rehearsal Studios, acoustic treatment was a foundational part of the build, not a finish detail. Here's what we did and why it makes a difference to you.
What's the difference between soundproofing and acoustic treatment?
These terms get used interchangeably, but they're not the same thing.
Soundproofing is about isolation — keeping sound from traveling between spaces. Acoustic treatment is about what happens to sound inside a room — controlling reflections, reducing flutter echo, and creating an environment where you can actually hear what you're playing.
A well-treated room with poor isolation will sound great inside but bleed into neighboring spaces. Good isolation with no treatment will be quiet from the outside but miserable to play in. You need both. We built for both.
What isolation measures are in place?
The rooms are built on a room-within-a-room framing principle using resilient channel. This means the interior walls and ceiling are mechanically decoupled from the building's main structure. Sound travels through solid material extremely efficiently — decoupling the room's shell interrupts that transmission path before it becomes your neighbor's problem.
All doors are fitted with acoustic seals and sweeps. Door gaps are one of the most common isolation failures in rehearsal spaces. A 1% gap in a wall can account for roughly 50% of the sound leakage. We sealed them.
Air sealing was addressed throughout the build. Any penetration — electrical, HVAC, anything — is a potential flanking path for sound. We treated those accordingly.
What acoustic treatments are inside the rooms?
Once you're inside the room, three treatments are doing the work:

Absorption panels are mounted on the walls to reduce early reflections and tame the high-mid frequencies that tend to pile up and create harsh, fatiguing sound. Without absorption, a small room with hard parallel walls turns into a sonic pinball machine. With it, you hear your instruments rather than the room reacting to your instruments.
These aren't just flimsy pieces of foam, they're custom made with Rockwool insulation.
Ceiling clouds are suspended absorption panels positioned overhead. The ceiling-to-floor reflection is one of the strongest and most consistent in any rectangular room, and it's often ignored. Ceiling clouds knock that down without requiring you to treat every square foot of wall space.
Diffusers are on the rear wall. Where absorption removes energy, diffusion scatters it — breaking up the reflection pattern without killing the liveliness of the room. This matters more than most people realize. An over-absorbed room sounds dead and claustrophobic. Diffusion gives the room some air and dimension while still controlling the problematic reflections. QRD (quadratic residue diffuser) is a mathematically derived diffuser pattern optimized for even scattering across a range of frequencies.
Why does any of this matter for a rehearsal?
A well-treated room does a few concrete things for your rehearsal:
It lets you hear each other more clearly at lower volumes. When a room is reflecting sound all over the place, everyone instinctively plays louder to cut through the wash. Treat the room and the whole dynamic of the rehearsal changes — you can communicate, you can hear the nuance in what you're playing, and you go home with less hearing fatigue.
It gives you a more accurate picture of your mix. If you've ever had a rehearsal where everything sounded great, then played a show and realized the guitars were buried, the room was lying to you. A treated room tells you something closer to the truth.
It makes recording reference tracks easier. If you ever want to run a quick phone recording of a rehearsal to review later, a treated room produces a usable recording. An untreated one produces a reverberant mess.
Is the studio fully soundproofed between rooms?
No rehearsal studio can claim perfect isolation — that standard exists in professional recording facilities with floating floors, air gaps, and six-figure construction budgets. What we can tell you is that the rooms were built with real isolation methodology, not cosmetic treatment. You will not be sitting in your room clearly hearing the band next door. Bleed between rooms has been addressed at the structural level, not papered over.
Who designed the acoustic treatment?
The build was owner-designed and owner-executed, informed by acoustic engineering principles. We're not a corporate chain that handed a floor plan to a contractor. Every decision about panel placement, diffuser positioning, and isolation detail was made deliberately.
That's not a liability — it's the reason the rooms were done right.
